How To Start A Lawnmower? A Detailed Guide

A Traditional Lawnmower

Step 1: Make sure that the lawnmower has both petrol and oil

First, you need to ensure that you have enough oil or petrol in your lawnmower. It’d better find the oil cap placed on the top of the mower near the motor fan to check this.

Then, open the lid and make sure that the oil has been filled (don’t’ forget to check the petrol). If not, you may need to refill the container before moving to the next step.

Step 2: Press the primer button

Press the primer button 3–5 times to active the lawnmower. This button is generally located on the top of the motor, which is near the oil cap. Click and hold the primer button a moment to channel the petrol into the lawnmower’s engine.

Step 3: Pull the level

Pull the lever near the top of the handle toward yourself. If you are behind the mower, you should see a bar or lever by the top of the handle.

Grab this level with your dominant hand and pull it back forcefully. In this step, you should be capable of firmly holding the lever and bar together in only one hand.

Notes:

This lever needs to be in the “starting” point before you pull the starting cord. Also, to keep the lawn mower’s motor running, you’ll need to hold this lever while you use the mower.

Step 4: Pull the starting cord

Pull the starting cord and firmly repeat this motion several times until the lawnmower is active. You will feel strong resistance, but continue to work through it. In the case of the non-starting mower, repeat this process.
